The apartments built during the period of “apartment boom” often have many small rooms in each compartment, which does not really fit today’s lifestyle anymore.
We have renovated a compartment of this type of apartment for a young family. We have designed an open space with one private room and a spacious living room instead of many small private rooms. This design allows you to feel other family members wherever you are in the house, and you can also keep an eye on kids from the kitchen.
We have also imagined how they might want to use the house when their kids grow up. Though it is rather rare for small kids to have their own rooms in Japan, they need their own rooms when they get older. So, we have used the partitions that you can move easily and designed the house in a way you can divide into some spaces easily with furniture.
Flexibility should be one of the most important factors when you design a house.
