The Place Created by the Owner’s Hope and His Fellow Workers’ Passions

This is a project of a dried fish café at Inamuragasaki in Kamakura. The young shop owner founded the café with two other fellow workers.

After seeing so many places to consider, this place brought the owner a special feeling. And he followed his intuition.

Inamuragasaki is a quiet but somehow attractive town where a local train, “enoden” is running. “The persona” was a 26-year-old girl living in Yokohama city. We have converted this very old building which used to be a dry cleaning shop to the café. Because the building was so old, there wasn’t a plan of it. We have started working on it by measuring, and many unexpected things happened after demolishing.

The clients used to be office workers, so this was the first time for them to work in a food industry. We have discussed closely about the menu, the shop concept, and the operation so many times. We have made the concept as “traveling the daily life of Kamakura”. We have focused on showing the uniqueness of Kamakura, such as walking on the “enoden” railway to go home, which is just a part of the people’s daily lives in Kamakura but never happens in the cities like Yokohama.

Because there was a limit in their budget, we did not use a construction company. Instead, the clients and their friends actually participated in making the interior and the exterior. This place was created by the owner’s strong will and his friends’ passions.

Like the name of this shop “yoridokoro”, we hope this place would be everyone’s “yoridokoro” which means a “last resort” in English.
