Tunnels are everywhere around the world. Yet, many people have rather negative images about them; dark, damp, scary, feeling oppressed…
“Tunnel Project” is a project to make tunnels with such negative images positive and beneficial through the power of design.
The aims of the project are :
1. Create an environmental-friendly, sustainable model
2. Make tunnels into something uplifting and fun to walk through
3. Provide environmental and food education for children and strengthen the sense of community
1. Create an environmental-friendly, sustainable model
We do not think “design” is just to make something aesthetically attractive. We think “design” is to create positive and beneficial environment and effects for men and the earth for a long time afterwards.
In this project, we will plant and grow herbs on walls of a tunnel. We plan to reuse rain water and use solar panels to use the power of sunshine for LED light for growing plants. By this system, sustainable, self-sufficient environment model will be created with a tunnel. We think sustainable systems will be absolutely essential factor in a society in many different aspects, given the limited resources and various kinds of environmental issues happening around the world today. The project also has a role to advocate the necessity of consideration for the environment and sustainable systems.
2. Make tunnels into something uplifting and fun to walk through
The project has its root in the negative feelings toward tunnels, and we assume that tunnels tend to have negative images for many people. If a tunnel is full of fresh green and feels alive, both kids and adults will enjoy walking there. We think it leads to a brighter and more fulfilling life to have such moments of feeling happy and connected to the surrounding environment even if it’s a short time in a daily life. We believe enriching one’s life is also what design does.
3. Provide environmental and food education for children and strengthen the sense of community
In the post-mass-production, mass-consumption society, we think it is beneficial to actively show the environmental-friendly, sustainable model for kids who lead the next generation. Also, by growing simple edible plants, children are able to experience to pick the plants grown by the power of nature, water and sun, with their own hands and eat them. Besides, if local people could corporate to maintain the system, the tunnel will be a community place which could put the local people together.
